MODERN TREATMENT WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dr. Neil L Starr

Dental Implants are the modern treatment for tooth loss. This revolutionary treatment is highly versatile and can be used to replace any number of missing teeth from one to all of them. Implants consist of small titanium screws that are surgically inserted into your jawbone. The implants are integrated into your jaw in a process known as “osseointegration”. This is the process in which your natural bone fuses to the screw interface gradually turning them into stable roots that are then used to support the natural looking ceramic crowns that replace your missing teeth.

Pros of dental implants include

Pros of dental implants include:

  • They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.
  • Your smile is completely restored, as is your confidence.
  • Implants are more comfortable – with your teeth being supported by these screw-like supports in the underlying jawbone structure.
  • Your adjacent teeth do not need to be altered in any way.
  • The posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your natural teeth and prevents further bone deterioration.

Cons of dental implants include:

  • You have to undergo surgery.
  • Recovery can take several weeks and maturation of the bone to the implant surface will require several months to stabilize.
  • They can be expensive.
  • If you do not have enough bone volume at the selected implant site, you may need a bone graft first to broaden or deepen the bone prior to or in concert with the implant installation.

Just remember, if you are missing even just one tooth, it is essential that you have that tooth replaced, even if you cannot see the space it has left behind. Leaving the space will often result in the teeth on either side of the space drifting toward the space and creating an imbalance in your tooth arrangement and your bite alignment.

Dr. Starr and his team have been on the forefront of Implant Technology and Implant Treatments for his patients since the modern-day introduction of the Branemark “endosseous” implants in 1983. He was part of the earliest dentist trainees, having taken the initial Branemark implant coursework in Toronto, Ontario, Canada before the curriculum was offered on a regular basis here in the USA.

Dr. Starr believes that Implant dentistry has been able to completely transform the failing dentitions of many of his patients by providing them with markedly improved chewing efficiency to provide them with the best nutritional value . He believes very strongly that a healthy set of teeth supported on implants will prolong your life ! Check out the testimonials of some of his patients who have made this transformation.

If you have had significant problems with your teeth over the years, it may be important to get a prosthodontic consultation to determine if implant treatment would benefit you in your future years. Studies are showing that those who can maintain long term chewing efficiency with their natural adult teeth or with an implant-supported third set of teeth will have the best opportunity to thrive through their 80’s and 90’s.

So as you reach your mid 60’s or early 70’s, it may be time to start thinking about how you can preserve your oral health throughout your future years.
