FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION/REHABILITATION

Dr. Neil L Starr

Your mouth has many responsibilities. It allows you to bite and chew your food. Your teeth are necessary for the first stages of digestion, breaking down the foods you eat to make the nutrients easily accessible. Your mouth is responsible for proper speech.

It can also make a powerful first impression when you smile.

From the dentist’s perspective, your teeth are responsible for maintaining your bite height and if you keep all your teeth, you are not likely to observe any collapse to your face height. Often, when the lower third of your face seems to be getting shorter, it may be a result of a collapsing set of teeth (dentition).

There are many factors that can affect the health and appearance of your mouth. At Neil Starr DDS PC, when indicated, we can restore your quality of life with a full mouth reconstruction.

WHY DO YOU NEED A FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION/REHABILITATION?

A full mouth reconstruction is an interdisciplinary approach to the restoration of your teeth to a healthy state, when there is much evidence of breakdown of teeth, bone, gums and roots of teeth. It is designed to restore and rebuild the teeth in your upper or lower jaw (or both jaws). It is a customizable procedure that often involves a combination of restorative dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and oral surgery. Full mouth reconstruction is used in a variety of different situations:

  • Your teeth are decayed, fractured, or otherwise damaged.
  • You have teeth that are severely worn (acid erosion or bruxism).
  • You have lost teeth as a result of decay, periodontal disease or structural failure.
  • You have dental developmental, dentoalveolar or skeletal developmental deformities that continue to require correction as you complete your facial growth.
  • Severe oral trauma.
  • Your teeth and jaw are severely misaligned, which then causes serious bite related problems with or without pain (temporomandibular joint disorder).

GETTING YOUR EXAM

Before receiving treatment, a comprehensive oral exam is required. During this exam, we check all areas of your mouth to determine the best treatment(s) for your specific needs. Along with a complete visual exam, we will also take Digital radiographs (x-ray images), Digital impressions (with our Trios (TM ) imaging optical scanner) and DSLR photos. We will look at all the components of your mouth, including:
  • The condition of your teeth. We inspect your teeth for signs of decay, fractures, chips, tooth wear, and other damage. This allows us to determine the best restorative options for your mouth.
  • The condition of your gums. We check your gums for signs of gum disease and its extent – looking for issues such as redness, swelling, inflammation, gum recession, periodontal pocket depth, and even excess gum tissue. This helps us to determine any necessary periodontal treatments.
  • The positions of your teeth and if they are misaligned.
  • The condition of your jaw. We look at your jawbone to assess its strength and stability.
  • The condition of your bite. We will check the alignment of your teeth and your jaw. If the alignment is off, this can cause excessive and uneven wear on your teeth, significant jaw and temporomandibular joint pain and an unpleasing smile. Problems with alignment can affect other necessary treatments, so these issues are often addressed first.
