Emergency Dental Implants

Emergency Implants Dr. Starr's Office, in Washington, DCYou do your very best to take care of your mouth. You follow the ADA guidelines, brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. You even maintain strict dental appointments for cleanings and exams every six months. Even with the best oral care regimen, however, accidents can still happen. Your tooth may be damaged beyond the help of a dental crown and need to be extracted. It may have even fallen out completely, and cannot be replanted. Replacing a missing tooth as soon as possible following a dental emergency is important for protecting the functions and health of your mouth. At Neil Starr, DDS, PC, we can replace your missing teeth with emergency Dental Implants.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a treatment designed to replace missing teeth, providing a unique, revolutionary, alternative to traditional bridges and dentures. They involve the use of small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. The posts integrate into the jaw as you heal, the bone fusing to them in a process known as osseointegration. Once you have fully healed, and the implants are fully integrated, they become strong, stable roots that provide the support for ceramic crowns. The crowns replace the visible surface of your missing teeth, restoring your abilities to bite, chew and speak, while also giving you back your beautiful smile.

Replacing Missing Teeth After an Emergency

Normally, placing dental implants involves an initial consultation, during which it is determined whether or not you are a candidate. Along with a thorough visual exam, we also take x-ray images. The images help us to see the condition of your jawbone and determine the best treatment plan for you. After your initial consultation, then the surgery is scheduled.

In these situations, implants are planned for. However, no one plans for a dental emergency, creating a different situation altogether. If you have lost a tooth, suffered severe tooth damage that requires an extraction, or the abutment teeth holding a dental bridge in place have become compromised, treatment is required immediately. Instead of leaving you without your missing teeth, we can place emergency implants right away. The compromised teeth, if they are remaining in your mouth, are first extracted. Next, we cut small incisions in your gums and drill holes into the jawbone. The implants are placed, and the tissue sutured closed around them. Finally, temporary replacement teeth are placed, providing you with some normal function while you heal. Much like with regular dental implants, your permanent crowns are created and placed after the implant has fully integrated into the jaw.

Emergency Dental Implant Benefits

There are several benefits associated with emergency dental implants. First, they provide the same benefits as any other implant. They are more comfortable than traditional replacement options, they are easy to care for, and they look and feel completely natural. Like regular dental implants, they also help to maintain the strength and integrity of your jawbone. However, because emergency implants are placed immediately following the loss of your teeth, they help to prevent any initial bone loss that might have occurred in the jaw. This results in minimal bone loss, helping to prevent any of the issues you may have been faced with if you had waited.

If a dental emergency leaves you without a tooth, emergency Dental Implants may be the solution for you. Call Neil Starr, DDS, PC today to learn more at (202) 293-7177.
