3D Imaging

3D rendering of a tooth at Dr. Starr and Dr. Orta's Office, in Washington, DCAt Neil Starr DDS PC, we strive to provide you with the best possible oral treatments. To achieve this goal, we utilize some of the most advanced diagnostic tools available. This technology allows us to provide you with more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans. One of the diagnostic tools we use is 3D imaging with ICAT technology.

What Is 3D Imaging?

3D imaging is a type of digital imaging technology (which means low-radiation). The technology used for 3D imaging is similar to that of a digital x-ray, and the images produced are similar to those produced by a traditional CT scan. 3D imaging utilizes a cone-shaped x-ray beam, which rotates a complete 360-degrees around your head. As the cone rotates, it takes several images. Once your scan is complete, all of the images are strung together to create one single 3-Dimensional image. It shows us your teeth, bones, soft tissues, and your nerves. With this image, we can create a more accurate diagnosis, and formulate more effective treatment plans.

Uses for 3D Imaging

There are multiple uses for a 3D image, including:
•  Evaluating the condition of your jawbone.
•  Assessing your candidacy for Dental Implants.
•  Diagnosing impacted teeth (wisdom teeth or other teeth).
•  Checking your sinus cavities, nasal passageways, and nerve passageways.
•  Diagnosing issues with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
•  Evaluating tumors in your jaw.
•  Planning oral reconstructive surgery.

Getting Your Scan

There is minimal preparation that needs to be done before getting your scan. We will advise you to remove all jewelry, including necklaces, earrings, and any other facial piercings. You will need to remove any metallic hair accessories, including clips, pins, and hair bands with metal clasps. If you wear hearing aids or glasses, these will need to be removed as well.

When you are ready, you sit at the machine and place your chin on the chin rest. We will make any necessary adjustments, which will allow us to capture the best possible image. Once the scan begins, it is important that you remain completely still. The scan will take less than 60 seconds, and is completely painless. It then only takes a few more seconds for your 3D image to appear on our computer monitor, ready for reading.

Benefits of 3D Imaging

3D imaging has several benefits:
•  Your scan is quick and painless.
•  We are provided with a high-quality image.
•  We can see teeth, bone, soft tissue and nerves, all in one single image.
•  Your scan takes only seconds to appear on our computer monitor, ready for evaluation. You have the advantage of being able to see the image as well, and we can help you to understand what we find.
•  A 3D scan allows us to see your mouth from multiple angles.
•  Specialized software that comes with this technology allows us to zoom in and enhance your images, which allow us to provide a better diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
•  The 3D image provides us with exact 1:1 measurements of your mouth, which allow us to design and create restorations that will fit perfectly in your mouth.

With 3D imaging, we can greatly improve the quality of your care, and provide you with more effective treatments to optimize your oral health. To learn more, or to schedule your appointment, call Neil Starr DDS PC today at (202) 293-7177.
