How Does Diet Affect Your Oral Health?

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Neil Starr DDS PC
How Does Diet Affect Your Oral Health?A diet affects your health in a significant way. Consuming a poor diet can make you vulnerable to oral health issues such as gum diseases, tooth cavities, and decay. There is a very close relationship between the food you consume and your oral health. For instance, acidic food can lead to the erosion of the teeth's enamel.

Your Diet can Cause Tooth Cavities Decay

Tooth decay occurs after the progressive destruction of the enamel of your teeth. Sugary foods such as sweets or soft drinks are the primary culprits that cause tooth decay. Bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugars and produce toxic acids as a by-product. The acids erode your enamel and, after a while, will cause tooth cavities and decay. The acids also alter the normal PH of your mouth and you will experience a sour taste.

Your Diet can Cause Gum Diseases

A poor diet can also interfere with the health of your gums. If you regularly consume a diet with refined sugars, it will lead to a buildup of plaque and inflammation of your gums. A gum disease leads to frustrating symptoms such as tender gums, swollen gums that easily bleed, or loose teeth. Ensure you refrain from eating foods with high levels of sugar.

Your Diet can Cause Missing Teeth

A poor diet, such as sugary foods, will slowly erode your teeth and lead to decay. Missing teeth, in most instances, occur due to tooth decay or severe gum disease. If you have missing teeth, it will lead to oral health problems and lower your self-esteem.

When selecting your food, ensure you choose healthy ones that will not interfere with your oral health. Try and consume foods that have essential nutrients for your mouth. You can select foods rich in minerals such as calcium, fiber, proteins, and vitamins. It is also good practice to regularly brush and floss your teeth.
