How Aging Affects Oral Health

Posted on 9/5/2022 by Neil Starr DDS PC
How Aging Affects Oral HealthOlder adults are more prone to dental disease than younger people. The many changes in the body as one age cause older adults to be prone to high risks of dental problems. Most common oral health that results from aging include

Tooth Discoloration

Yellowing and graying teeth in older adults are prevalent. The hard outer covering is more worn out in aged people, thus the tooth discoloration.

Tooth Decay

Due to the consistent tooth loss in many older people, tooth decay is quickly developed in their dental formula. Aging causes the roots of the tooth to weaken, eventually causing many teeth loss; hence the need for dental implants is a good option for this category of people.

Decreases the Immune System

Aging causes a decrease in the immune system among older people, making them susceptible to dental abnormalities such as gingivitis, cavities, and even oral cancer. The decreased immune system reduces the measure of good bacteria in the mouth necessary to fight germs and infections.

Formation of a Dry Mouth

Aging reduces the saliva level in the mouth, causing the development of a painfully dry mouth that may produce sores that ooze pus within the mouth. More so, a dry mouth can lead to infections or cavities. In addition, dry mouth causes the formation of bad breath in aged people. In addition, caries often occurs in older people due to decreases saliva.

How to Maintain the Health of Teeth and Gums in Old People

For aged individuals, helping them know the need to maintain their oral health at that age is critical. Ensure they brush and floss their teeth regularly, especially twice a day, and encourage feeding healthy foods rich in fruits and vegetables to boost and improve their immunity. Calcium-rich foods are vital in strengthening their bones and reducing tooth loss. It is essential, therefore, to prevent and be attentive to the symptoms that occur due to aging to avoid tooth loss and developing dental diseases.
