Here's What to Expect from Your Dental Crown Procedure
Posted on 6/8/2022 by Neil Starr DDS PC
If you’re going through a dental crown procedure, it’s important to know what you should be able to expect.

Let’s discuss what dental crowns are and what the procedure is like to place them.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are essentially caps that completely cover damaged teeth. Dental crowns offer more protection than veneers and are ideal for teeth with structural damage.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are made from a variety of different materials, the most common being:

  • All porcelain - All porcelain crowns are typically used only on front teeth, mostly for aesthetic purposes. They are meant to closely resemble your natural teeth so that you end up with a seamless looking smile. The further back in the mouth all porcelain veneers are, the higher chance they have of cracking as porcelain is not a particularly strong material.

  • Porcelain fused with metal - This choice offers the strength of a metal crown with the aesthetic benefits of a porcelain crown.

  • Gold - Because gold veneers are extremely durable and a bit conspicuous, they are commonly used on back molars where extra strength is needed, but they cannot usually be seen.

  • Other less common crown materials include:

  • Zirconia

  • Ceramic

  • Composite resin

  • Metal

  • Your dentist will determine the type of material that will work best for you and your teeth, taking into consideration how much of your natural tooth is remaining, the location of the crown, the condition of your gums, the color of the surrounding teeth, and your personal preference.

    The Dental Crown Procedure

At our practice, we place crowns over the course of two separate appointments. During the first appointments, your teeth will be shaped to fit your new crown(s), and any decay will be removed. We’ll also take impressions of your teeth so that we can custom make your crowns right in our own lab. While your permanent crowns are being made, you’ll likely wear temporary crowns. During your second appointment, we’ll place your permanent crowns, and either Dr. Orta or myself will ensure that they properly fit and allow for a comfortable bite.

    Aftercare

After your permanent crowns have been placed, it’s imperative that you properly maintain them by regularly brushing and flossing, as well as visiting your dentist for cleanings.
