How Long Do Dental Veneers Last on Average?

Dental veneers can be a viable option for those who’d like to conceal imperfections on the teeth, such as staining, chipping, and cracking.
In this article, we’ll discuss what veneers are, what they do, how long they last, and how you can maintain them to extend their life.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are tooth-colored porcelain shells that are permanently bonded to the teeth in order to create the appearance of a perfect smile. Veneers are typically applied by removing and grinding down parts of the natural teeth in an irreversible process that may require local anesthetic. At Neil Starr, DDS. Dr. Orta and I take pride in our dental lab where we custom make veneers for our patients. You can learn more about our innovative porcelain veneer creation and placement process here.
Why Get Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a great choice for those with:
Chipped, intrinsically stained, or cracked teeth
Teeth that have been worn down
Minorly misaligned teeth
Misshapen or asymmetrical teeth
Many of our patients choose to get veneers to improve self-confidence that may have been brought down by aesthetic imperfections in their smile. Veneers are a durable cosmetic solution on their own, or as part of our smile makeover process.
How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?
If properly cared for, veneers can last for about 10-15 years depending on the patient and any extenuating circumstances. This longevity makes veneers a viable long term cosmetic option for any of the aforementioned aesthetic issues. Because the natural teeth are ground down in the veneer placement process, if your veneers crack, break, or fall off, they will need to be replaced with new ones.
Maintaining Your Veneers
In order to keep your veneers in good working condition, just like your natural teeth, you’ll need to meticulously maintain them. Here are our tips to maintain your new smile:
Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day.
Avoid chewing on hard objects like pen caps, fingernails, or hard candies.
Avoid using your teeth as a tool to open packages, letters, or bottles.
Avoid using your front teeth to chew.
If you play sports wear a mouthguard, and if you tend to grind your teeth wear a protective night guard.
Avoid foods and beverages that could stain your veneers like coffee or wine.
