5 Ways Porcelain Veneers Can Improve a Patient's Smile
Posted on 4/20/2022 by Neil Starr DDS PC |
We believe everyone should be able to show off their smile with confidence, and porcelain veneers are one of the best ways to make this happen. It’s truly incredible how cosmetic dentistry can positively impact someone’s life— seeing a patients smile with confidence again is what makes dental specialists so passionate about dentistry.
You can see this level of impact in anything from dental implants to dental bridges, but veneers are one of the more common procedures that really draws people in when it comes to dental cosmetics that can improve their smiles.
What are Porcelain Veneers
Dental veneers are made to mimic the appearance of your natural teeth in a perfected manner. Patients come in for veneer applications when they want to conceal imperfections on their teeth so that they can enjoy their smiles again. They’re made from thin, porcelain shells, which I then bond to their teeth to create a beautiful, symmetrical smile.
Here are five ways that porcelain veneers can improve a patient’s smile. 1. Porcelain Veneers Can Cover Stained and Discolored Teeth
When you think about a beautiful smile, you think of brilliant white teeth. Stained and discolored teeth are one of the main reasons people consider porcelain veneers; it will get you the dazzling look you want.
Veneers are an excellent long-term option for covering stains and discoloration, but it’s crucial that the patient maintain a regular dental hygiene routine to ensure that their veneers last as long as possible; with proper care, veneers can last upwards of ten years. 2. Porcelain Veneers Can Fill or Cover Gaps in Your Teeth
You’v seen it time and time again; people trying not to smile with their teeth out of a desire to hide the gaps between their teeth.
We believe that no one should feel the need to hide their smile.
There’s a better way to hide gaps than by not smiling. Dental veneers do a fantastic job of covering gaps and imperfections so that you can smile away. I love dental veneers because you can get them to match a patient's teeth as closely as possible in terms of their natural tooth color.
This makes patients feel like they never lost their smile in the first place. 3. Porcelain Veneers Can Fix Gummy Smiles
Some patients don’t necessarily have a problem with their teeth per se, but they may feel that their gums are too prominent. Some procedures, such as gum reshaping and crown lengthening, can address these issues, but sometimes a patient may be looking for a different solution. In these cases, veneers can add some length to your teeth and even out that ratio.
If you happen to have imperfections so minor that you didn’t mind them, or notice them in the first place, it may not be worth it to get veneers for them alone. But, getting them covered because you got veneers for symmetry is just a bonus. 4. Porcelain Can Even Out Misaligned Teeth
Many patients come in wanting to do something about their misaligned teeth. Porcelain veneers can help you achieve an even smile without the need for years worth of orthodontic treatment. Custom-made veneers are a quick and effective way to address misaligned teeth at a more affordable price.
If your misaligned teeth aren’t causing you pain and you just want cosmetic change, veneers are the best way to go. 5. Porcelain Veneers Can Protect Damaged Enamel
Enamel is the protective coat on your teeth. The thing about enamel is that it can deteriorate over time from acidic drinks, foods, and abrasive brushing; this leaves your teeth susceptible to damage and decay. It’s often recommend that patients invest in porcelain veneers to protect their teeth when they’re this vulnerable.
Not only will your teeth look better with veneers, but you’ll also be able to enjoy your smile longer and keep it safe from decay.
The Application Process
So what can you expect during the application process of porcelain veneers? While it may vary between different dental offices, you will typically find that it is a two-visit process to get your veneers attached.
During the first visit, a small portion of the natural tooth structure will be removed so that there is ample room for the veneer. An etching will be taken of each tooth that will have a veneer applied to achieve a better bond between your natural tooth and the porcelain shell. Once that’s done, impressions will be taken to create the final product.
During the second visit, the final veneer is taken and attached to the patient’s teeth using strong dental adhesive. And just like that, you have the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
