Does Alcohol in Some Types of Mouthwash Make Gum Disease Treatment Easier?

Does Alcohol in Some Types of Mouthwash Make Gum Disease Treatment Easier? For a long time, people would buy mouthwash that had alcohol in it to help rid their mouths of the early stages of gum disease. They believed that this practice would help make treating the problem easier. However, as research has found, it does very little to improve treating gum disease. It can actually make treating the problem more difficult. If you want help treating gum disease, we are the professionals you need to turn to.

Why Can Alcohol Make Gum Disease Treatment Less Effective?

Alcohol is harmful to your gum tissue. It dries it out, makes it less resilient when there is a problem, and it can actually accelerate gum disease progression. If you use a mouthwash with alcohol in it, your mouth is actually getting very few of the benefits that would normally accompany mouthwash use. Instead, what you want to do is come to us to help you treat your gum disease, and save the mouthwash for when you are rinsing your mouth after brushing and flossing at home. We recommend a mouthwash that kills off microbes in most cases, but we can tell you which is best for you when you come in.
What we do to treat gum disease has very little to do with mouthwash. We start with a scaling, which removes buildup from your teeth, and a root planing, which lets us go all the way down the roots of your teeth to give your mouth a really thorough clean. From there, we treat any gum pockets that are holding bacteria, and slowly work to rebuild the overall health of your gums and mouth.
Do you want to know what else goes into gum disease treatment? Then call our office today, and let us discuss the process with you. The sooner you get it started, the better!
