![]() You don't have to simply live with it, either. We're here to help you deal with any source of oral pain. If you bite down and something hurts, here are some of the potential causes. Your Tooth Has Lost its EnamelWithout the enamel that coats their outsides, your teeth are left vulnerable to bacteria that cause cavities. Plaque and tartar can eat through this enamel over time, leaving the dentin, the nerves, and other parts of the tooth exposed. Biting down on these softer parts of the tooth can cause pain. Over time, the plaque will further eat away at them, leading to a major toothache.Cracking a tooth can also expose the interior parts of it, leading to pain when biting down. You've Lost or Broken a FillingAnother thing that can cause pain when you bite down is losing a filling or breaking the filling. That also exposes the weakened inner part of the tooth and can cause pain. There are a number of things that can cause a filling to come loose or break, including trauma to the tooth and grinding your teeth at night. Sometimes, even biting down on something hard can cause an older filling to crack. You Have Gum DiseaseIf your gums have receded from your teeth due to gum disease, they no longer have the support they need. This can cause pain when you bite down, especially if the roots of the teeth have been exposed. If you've felt any pain when biting down, we can help you deal with the cause.
